Here at Tyre2you we offer a puncture repair service. We can carry out the puncture repair at our Tyre2you Radstock depot but we are also able to offer a puncture repair service on our mobile fitting vans.
Many punctures can be repaired safely without the need of buying a new tyre. At Tyre2you whether we are repairing the puncture on the mobile fitting van or at the depot we follow the British Tyre manufacturers Association guidelines to ensure the repair is safe.
The BTMA only condones tyre repairs which are carried out in accordance with the recommendations in the prevailing issue of British Standard BS AU 159. Before commencement Tyre2you confirms that all repair work will be carried out in accordance with these BSI guidelines.
Before starting a puncture repair at Tyre 2you we have to do a visual inspection. We follow the procedure as recommended by the BTMA.
1. INITIAL INSPECTION
a) In the interests of safety, if it is necessary to partially inflate the tyre to locate the injury/penetration, proceed with caution in 5 psi increments and do not exceed 15 psi. b) Remove the tyre from the wheel and thoroughly inspect, both internally and externally. c) Do not undertake repair if the tyre exhibits any of the following:
- Previous repairs outside the scope of BS AU 159 unless they are specialist repairs carried out by the original tyre manufacturer.
- Inadequate tread depth (legal minimum 1.6mm).
- Splits, cuts, rubber crazing/cracking reaching the casing.
- Significant contamination by solvents etc.
- Bead damage, including broken bead core.
- Liner deterioration.
- Secondary effects, e.g. under-inflation/deflation damage or savaging by the point of a penetrating object.
- Exposed cords due to tread wear or sidewall scuffing.
- Tread or sidewall rubber separation.
- Belt separation (radial ply tyres).
- Casing break-up.
British Standard BSAU159 defines the requirements for safe minor car tyre puncture repair and its proximity to the sidewall. To remain compliant, here at Tyre2you we are only able to carry out tyre repairs to the central ¾ of the tyre (known as the minor repair area). If the puncture is situated outside of this area it is deemed too close to the sidewall to guarantee a safe and lasting minor repair.
Once we have determined whether the puncture is safe to repair, we will carry out the repair in accordance with British Standard BS AU 159. All puncture repairs include a new valve and balancing of the wheel at Tyre2you.
