Here at tyre2you in Radstock we are open all year round, winter or summer we can advise you and check your tyres. Certain weather conditions however can drastically affect your tyres.
The UK has gone heat
mad! Record temperatures of over 40C have reached us! The hot weather can
affect cars and especially tyres. It’s science: cold contracts, heat expands…….
and car tyres follow this rule. Generally, for every 10°C change in ambient
temperature, tyre pressure increases by around 0.1 bar, even if the vehicle
hasn’t been driven. While this
doesn’t sound like much, remember that there is only 30-35 PSI in the tyres of
passenger vehicles. Although a fluctuation of 0.1 bar
may not seem very much, the average car’s tyre pressure is usually kept at
around 32 PSI which is approximately 2.2 bar – so even the smallest addition of
air pressure can make a big difference to your tyres, particularly when you
consider the combination of air temperature and road temperature. Hot air inside
a tyre can cause it to expand, eventually leading to a blowout and dangerous
consequences.
The rubber on tyres is designed and engineered
to have high resistance to low heat build-up, abrasion, and perishing but
everything has its limits. At tyre2you we recommend that you check your tyre
pressure weekly during the warmer summer months, with daily checks during a
heatwave.
Signs to look out for in the summer months:
Check your tyre pressures – or pop in to Tyre2you and we will check them for you free of charge.
Hot tyres – if they are hot when you touch them it can be a sign that the tyres are overheating. If necessary, pull over and wait for them to cool down.
Free tyre check – ask any of our trained staff to check your tyres – tyres that are worn and thin are more likely to leak air – we can advise you your tyre treads and check the tyre condition on the vehicle and make sure your tyres are inflated to the recommended pressure.
Adhere to the speed limit – the faster you go, the more friction on your tyres which will make them heat up.
If you are worried about extreme weather conditions and your tyre safety, feel free to pop into Radstock Tyre2you and we can offer a free safety check.
