At Tyre2you in Radstock we take tyre safety very seriously, here are some helpful hints on how to check your tyres. Always make sure your tyres are cold before you check them. Start by parking the car on level ground and make sure it is secure.

  • Check all the way round each tyre for damage such as cuts, bulges and nails or screws. For this it might be easiest to have a friend drive the car slowly backwards and forwards while you inspect the entire circumference of the tyre.
  • Look for uneven tyre wear, which could be a sign of a problem such as wheel alignment. You need to look to see if the inner or outer edge is wearing. You can always pop into Tyre2you in Radstock and we will happily check your tyres for free.
  • You also need to look to see how much tread is left – if the tyre has worn too much it could be illegal. The minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm of tread all around and across the central three quarters of the tyre.
  • To check the tread depth, insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If the outer rim of the coin is covered by the tread your tyres are ok, but if the outer rim of the 20p is visible you need to replace your tyres.
  • Finish by checking each tyres pressure when the tyres are cold. You need to have driven less than two miles before checking pressures. You can check pressures at any petrol station with an air gauge or simply pop into Tyre2you in Radstock and we will happily check your tyre pressures for free.

Do not forget to check the spare wheel too!
