Very often at Tyre2you, we see tyres where the inner edge has worn down to the wire due to the tracking being out and most times as it is hidden people do not realise how bad the condition of their tyres are. Tyres worn down to the canvas or exposing wire are highly dangerous and could blow out at any time.  Wheel alignment, or tracking, is the process of ensuring your vehicle’s wheels are set to the optimum position, as per the car manufacturer’s specifications. Incorrect alignment can result in rapid irregular tyre wear and can even affect the handling and safety of the vehicle.

Do I need wheel alignment?

Have you noticed difficulties with steering, or your vehicle pulling to one side? Are your tyres wearing on one side more than the other? These symptoms are classic signs of wheel misalignment. Watch out for:

  • Uneven or abnormal tyre wear
  • Drag or pulling to one side
  • Steering wheel vibration
  • Scrubbing or squealing noises at low speeds

A tyre that is 'toed in' will show wear on the outer shoulder of the tyre, while a tyre that is 'toed out' will show wear on the inner shoulder. Different types of vehicles require different toe settings to allow for the way that wheels either pull towards each other or apart.

For the best performance, you ideally want to have as much of the surface area of the tyre to be in contact with the ground as possible. Getting your Wheel Alignment checked and adjusted regularly will help optimise your vehicle's fuel consumption, road handling and tyre life. Misaligned wheels can lead to uneven tyre wear and shorter tyre life, meaning you will need to get your tyres replacing sooner than normal.

Wheel alignment problems can be caused by hitting a kerb, driving into a pothole in the road or by excessive wear to steering or suspension components. It is important to get your wheel alignment checked annually to ensure you get the most out of your tyres.
